buy gold dubai

Dubai Gold and Commodities Exchange launched the Gulf's first same-day-settled physical spot gold contract in June 2026, priced on 1kg UAEGD bars. That single fact tells you what kind of market this is: wholesale-grade, exchange-verified, built around bars that meet the UAE Good Delivery standard DMCC created. The Gold Souk in Deira still holds the retail crown, more than 300 shops and roughly 10 tonnes of gold on display at any time, but the serious buying we handle rarely touches a souk counter.

This page sets out what a private buyer actually pays in Dubai once tax is accounted for, what we supply and at what indicative bands, how KYC and settlement run under UAE rules, and the traps that catch buyers who shop on premium alone.

Why buy gold in Dubai: the tax position first

Start with the number that matters most. UAE VAT is 5%, but investment-grade bullion at 99% purity or higher, in bar, ingot or coin form, is zero-rated, and Cabinet Decision 127 of 2024 extends a reverse-charge mechanism to registered B2B traders. Jewellery and gold under 99% purity carry the full 5% on the invoice. There is no capital gains or income tax on an individual's gold profit either way.

Retail 24K gold was trading around AED 513 to 516 a gram in Dubai the week of 25 September 2026, against the $4,298/oz spot reference, which moves daily and is quoted live at order time.

The institutions around that price are real, as context, not as anyone we broker through. DMCC in Jumeirah Lakes Towers licenses most bullion houses and created the Dubai Good Delivery standard, now UAE Good Delivery. The Dubai Gold District, an Ithra Dubai hub, opened in January 2026, and Al Etihad Gold's UAEGD accreditation backs the refining side. None of these bodies sell to you directly, we do, but they set the standard this market gets measured against.

How a private purchase runs

  1. A short WhatsApp brief: which product, how much, your timeline.
  1. We quote against live spot the moment we reply, not a stale rate card.
  1. ID and proof of funds, standard KYC. Dealers register through DET for mainland licences or DMCC for free-zone licences, with the Ministry of Economy's AML Department and the Central Bank supervising compliance. Every dealer must register on goAML as a Dealer in Precious Metals and Stones, and AED 55,000 or more triggers a mandatory DPMS report under Cabinet Resolution 134 of 2025. Discretion means white-glove handling, never anonymity: we do not skip that step.
  1. Settlement, then collection in person or vaulting in Jumeirah Lakes Towers, where DMCC operates its own vault in Almas Tower.
  1. Travelling with the metal: cash plus precious metals and stones worth over AED 60,000 combined must be declared to ICP or Dubai Customs under Federal Decree-Law 10 of 2025. Our guide to carrying gold through airports legally covers all three hubs.

Buying traps in the Dubai market

Three problems account for most bad purchases we get asked to unwind.

Premium creep is the most common. A souk counter or a mall jeweller will often quote a percentage over spot that looks small until you compare it against a DMCC-licensed dealer quoting the same bar. Ask for the premium as an explicit percentage over live spot, in writing, before you agree to anything.

Unsealed bars are the second. A 1kg or 100g bar with a broken or missing assay card needs an ultrasound or XRF scan before money changes hands, even from a dealer you have used before. Our guide to verifying a gold bar is real covers what that check looks for, including tungsten-filled fakes.

Counterfeits are rare at licensed dealers and common at informal sellers outside the DMCC net. Buy through a refiner-authorized dealer and check the serial against the refiner's own portal where one exists. If you are selling an inherited collection rather than buying, our guide to selling inherited gold in Dubai covers that process separately.

  • Refiner on the current LBMA Good Delivery List
  • Serial number matched against the refiner's own lookup portal
  • Ultrasound or XRF scan for any bar outside sealed packaging
  • Premium sanity-checked against live spot, in writing

Frequently asked questions

How much gold can I buy in Dubai before KYC applies?

There is no minimum, KYC applies to every transaction regardless of size. What changes is the paperwork: any deal of AED 55,000 or more, a little over $15,000, triggers a mandatory DPMS report to goAML under Cabinet Resolution 134 of 2025, on top of the standard ID and proof-of-funds checks.

Is gold really tax-free to buy in Dubai?

Investment-grade bullion at 99% purity or higher, in bar, ingot or coin form, is zero-rated for VAT. Jewellery and anything under 99% purity carries the standard 5%. There is no capital gains or income tax on an individual's profit either way, but check the invoice shows zero-rating explicitly before you pay.

Can I collect gold in person or does it need to be vaulted?

Both are normal here. Many private buyers collect in person the same day settlement clears. Others use vault capacity in Jumeirah Lakes Towers, where DMCC licenses most bullion houses and operates its own vault in Almas Tower. Tell us your preference when you brief us and we price both routes.

What happens if I try to fly out of Dubai with gold I bought?

Cash plus precious metals and stones worth more than AED 60,000 combined, in or out, must be declared to ICP or Dubai Customs under Federal Decree-Law 10 of 2025. Below that combined value there is nothing to declare for personal travel. Our airport guide covers the Singapore and Hong Kong equivalents too.
