how to sell inherited gold in dubai

A box of jewellery, a handful of sovereigns, sometimes an old bar nobody has touched in decades, that is what lands on our desk when a family settles an estate and starts selling gold in Dubai. Nobody hands you an instruction manual for this, and the jeweller who sold a piece to a grandparent decades ago is not automatically the right buyer now.

This is the process as we run it: which papers help, how an assay-first valuation works gram by gram, why we check a coin's numismatic value before anyone reaches for a melting pot, and what the AED 55,000 reporting threshold means for you as a seller: a sign the dealer is properly licensed, not a reason to be nervous.

Do I need probate or an inheritance affidavit to sell inherited gold in Dubai?

No single document settles a sale by itself. What we ask a family to bring is a set of probate-adjacent papers establishing, in plain terms, that the gold is theirs to sell. None of this replaces the dealer's own checks: every registered Dubai dealer confirms ID and ownership on every trade, inherited or not. Treat the list below as what speeds up a conversation that happens anyway, not a gate to clear.

  • A death certificate for the original owner
  • A probate or succession certificate, where the estate went through formal administration
  • A signed consent letter from co-heirs, if jointly inherited
  • The original purchase receipt or assay certificate, if the family still has it
  • Your own passport or Emirates ID

How is inherited gold valued: weight and karat alone, or collector value too?

Every valuation starts with an independent karat test, XRF or acid, since a stamp alone is not proof of what is inside. From there it is arithmetic: fine-gold weight, net of stones, priced against spot.

The part that is not mechanical is checking whether a piece is worth more as a coin than as bullion, before anything nears a melting pot. A gold sovereign carries 7.322 grams of fine gold, close to melt on a modern strike, but a historic date can carry a real collector premium once graded. At the far end, vintage and numismatic coins: a common circulated double eagle trades a little above melt, while a certified rare date has sold for as much as 18.87 million dollars, the 1933 Double Eagle at Sotheby's in 2021. Melt is the floor, never the ceiling, and checking costs nothing.

Item types and which valuation route actually fits

Not every piece in a mixed inheritance wants the same process. Here is how we sort a typical collection before we quote anything.

Matching item type to valuation route
Item typeBest valuation route
Plain jewellery, chains, broken piecesKarat test (XRF or acid), fine-weight calculation, priced as a percentage of melt
Modern bullion bars and coins with certificatesSerial and refiner verification, priced close to spot plus a small premium
Sovereigns and pre-war coinsNumismatic check first: date, mintmark and condition against reference grades, melt only if nothing rare surfaces
Mixed inherited collectionsFull sort: bullion priced to spot, anything historic pulled aside for grading first

What percentage of melt value should I expect, in writing?

For scrap and jewellery, expect a quote as an explicit percentage of spot value, in writing, before agreeing to anything. Reputable Dubai buyers pay roughly 80 to 92 percent of melt; the wider market runs 40 to 92 percent, and the low end is where informal cash-for-gold outlets sit. There is no fixed law setting this number, which is why two or three competing quotes are worth taking first. Ask for a transparent per-gram schedule by karat, not a lump sum for the whole box. See our gold jewellery and scrap page for how that schedule is built.

What ID and proof of ownership do I need to sell gold in Dubai?

Bring a passport or Emirates ID and be ready to briefly explain how the gold came to you. Every dealer in precious metals and stones must register on goAML and run this check on every client, inherited items included. A transaction of AED 55,000 or more triggers a mandatory report under Cabinet Resolution 134 of 2025, and a dealer who skips this step is the real red flag, not the paperwork. Discretion here means quiet, white-glove handling, appointment-only viewings, confirmed payment, never an offer to skip identification. Nobody licensed makes that offer.

Do I pay tax when selling inherited gold in the UAE, and can I get paid the same day?

No capital gains or income tax applies to an individual's profit on a personal gold sale in the UAE. VAT mostly concerns the dealer's own books, not your payout: UAE VAT is 5 percent, investment-grade bullion of 99 percent purity or higher is zero-rated, jewellery and gold under 99 percent carries the full 5 percent on the dealer's resale invoice, not deducted from your quote.

Same-day settlement after assay is the market norm once a quote is agreed, cash or bank transfer. Treat any offer of instant payment before testing is complete as a reason to slow down, not speed up.

Where is the safest place to sell inherited gold: the Souk, a mall jeweller or a private desk?

The Dubai Gold Souk in Deira is the retail heart of the trade, more than 300 shops and roughly 10 tonnes of gold on display, good for scrap and simple bullion: walk between buyers and compare cash offers in an afternoon. What it does not guarantee, shop to shop, is numismatic expertise, so a rare coin can get priced as scrap by someone not looking past the karat stamp.

Private, appointment-based bullion houses cluster in Jumeirah Lakes Towers under DMCC licences, where confidential, assay-first handling is the norm. For a mixed collection, sovereigns next to a chain and a bar, that venue usually catches value the Souk would price straight to melt. Whichever you choose, insist on the basics: an independent test in front of you, a written percentage of spot, and ID checked properly. Our guide to verifying a gold bar covers the same checks a good desk runs first.

Moving an inherited collection out of the country

Families abroad sometimes need to bring a collection into the UAE, or take proceeds out after a sale. Travellers carrying cash plus precious metals and stones worth over AED 60,000 combined, either direction, must declare to ICP or Dubai Customs under Federal Decree-Law 10 of 2025. That differs from the AED 55,000 dealer reporting figure above: one covers what you carry through the airport, the other what a dealer reports after a trade, worth knowing both before travelling. Our guide to carrying gold through airports legally walks through the rules at all three hubs.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need probate to sell inherited gold in Dubai?

Not a single legal gate, but probate-adjacent papers help: a death certificate, a succession certificate where one exists, co-heir consent if shared, and your passport or Emirates ID. Every dealer checks ID and ownership regardless, so this paperwork speeds up the conversation.

How is inherited gold valued in Dubai?

Bullion and jewellery are valued by an independent karat test and fine-gold weight against spot. Coins and historic pieces get an extra step first: a numismatic check, since an old coin can be worth more than melt once graded. Melt is the floor, never the ceiling.

What ID do I need to sell gold in Dubai?

A passport or Emirates ID, and be ready to briefly explain how the gold came to you. Every registered dealer runs this check under UAE AML rules, and AED 55,000 or more triggers a mandatory report, a sign of a licensed dealer, not a problem for a legitimate seller.

Do I pay tax when selling inherited gold in the UAE?

No capital gains or income tax applies to your profit on the sale. VAT mostly concerns the dealer's own invoicing on resale, not your payout, and same-day cash or bank settlement after assay is standard practice.

Where is the safest place to sell inherited gold in Dubai?

For straightforward scrap and bullion, the Gold Souk's density of shops lets you compare offers quickly. For mixed collections that might include historic coins, a private, appointment-based house in JLT is usually safer, since numismatic expertise there catches value a scrap-focused buyer could miss.
